One Health &
Climate Change

The One Health approach recognizes that human wellbeing is inextricably linked to animal and environmental health. This integrated framework has become increasingly crucial as we face global challenges like zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food security, and climate change. At HSTP, we partner with the state of Odisha to implement their State One Health Action Plan. Our work focuses on building capacity among key departments to address critical infectious diseases including Zoonotic Influenza, Anthrax, and Scrub Typhus through a holistic lens. Our commitment extends beyond Odisha as we work to create resilient communities that understand and act on the interconnections between human, animal, and environmental health. Together, we can build a future where these three pillars of health are protected and enhanced in harmony.

OUR WORK

supporting the state of odisha

HSTP brings extensive technical expertise to Odisha through strategic partnerships with leading institutions including ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre and AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Our formal collaboration with the State Health Department enables us to provide comprehensive technical support and capacity building across the state. As the lead capacity building partner for the State Institute of Health & Family Welfare, we facilitate knowledge sharing and strengthen public health practices through the Regional Resource Centre.

Our deep roots in Odisha include strong relationships with government institutions, academic partners, and research agencies. This established network, combined with our understanding of local contexts and proven track record of successful project implementation, allows us to effectively mobilize expertise and resources for improved health outcomes.

HSTP is privileged to support Odisha in becoming India’s first state to operationalize a One Health Action Plan. A cornerstone of this initiative is developing a Model One Health District that integrates cross-sectoral resources and expertise. By fostering collaboration between government agencies, academic institutions, and community organizations, we’re helping Odisha build resilience against climate-related health challenges through the One Health approach.

Preventing the Next Pandemic: The Role of an Effective One Health Programme in India

In 2023, HSTP conducted a comprehensive analysis of India’s readiness to address zoonotic infectious diseases (ZIDs) through the One Health approach. Our research, conducted between March and May, combined extensive literature review with expert interviews to evaluate existing systems for identifying, reporting, and mitigating ZIDs affecting both humans and animals. The study also mapped national and state-level policies, analyzing their alignment or potential conflicts with One Health practices.

The findings were presented in a policy brief, released through a well-attended national webinar on May 20, 2023, drawing over 150 participants from across India.

Charting the Course: Analysis of India's State-Level Policies to Counter Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

HSTP conducted a comprehensive landscape analysis examining policies and programs addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across human and animal health sectors. The research evaluated both national strategies and state-specific initiatives, culminating in a policy brief published in November 2023. This analysis explored the implementation challenges states face in adopting national AMR policies and outlined pathways for establishing robust One Health interventions at the state level to reduce epidemic risks and combat antimicrobial resistance.
